AfAA First Annual International Arbitration Conference on: The Coming of Age of International Arbitration in Africa, Kigali, Rwanda
Dr. Ismail Selim represented at the AfAA First Annual International Arbitration Conference on: “The Coming of Age of International Arbitration in Africa”, held on 3-4 April 2018, CRCICA was a media partner to the event and 10 Egyptian lawyers attended the Conference. The Conference focused on Africa’s achievements in international arbitration and how to increase participation of African experts in international arbitration. During the first day, the Keynote Speech was presented by Judge Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf, President of the International Court of Justice and member of CRCICA’s Board of Trustees. The AfAA was officially launched in the host state during the opening ceremony. The first day also witnessed the AfAA General Assembly Meeting, the presentation of the African Arbitration Survey and the responses to the Survey by African States. The second day included four panel discussions tackling important issues, for instance, the African Arbitration Association is here: Now What?, the Africanization of international disputes: Rethinking our approach to international dispute practitioners, the use of African arbitral institutions: The Pan African Investment Code paves the way, and investment arbitration developments in Africa.
Dr. Selim spoke at the Panel titled: “The Use of African Arbitral Institutions: The Pan African Investment Code Paves the Way”. His speech shed light on CRCICA’s background as an independent organization under the auspices of the AALCO, CRCICA’s rules, caseload and role in both international and regional arbitration. He also shed light on the different mechanisms to appoint arbitrators under CRCICA’s rules, and the role of national courts to support arbitration.
On 3 and 4 April 2019, Dr. Selim has also attended the AfAA General Assembly Meeting and Board Meeting.
